The Tracker
by Tom Brown, Jr.
I wonder if I could ever do this book the justice
it deserves.
I have told so many people about Tom Brown,
Jr. I have told so many stories about his adventures. I have
hooked so many people onto his books, it's amazing.
Why?
His stories (all true) seem to resonate with
people. The Tracker is Tom's first book. It details some of
his mind-boggling adventures in the woods from age 8 to 18.
He and his best friend, Rick, were taught during this time
by Rick's grand-father, an 80-year old Apache elder.
From constantly being hunted by a pack of wild
dogs while they were still children...to tracking animals
all night long using only their hands...to finding a dead
body inadvertantly by building a fire over it's frozen shallow
grave...to living in the woods naked for a year with nothing
but a knife....oh, boy...I could go on.
This book is easy to read because you just can't
wait to find out what happens next. And I've only touched
the surface.
It is so well-written too. The dramatic last
chapter tells the story of the time Tom was at a race against
time to track down a mentally challenged man over a 4-day
period. The man was lost in the woods yet managed to survive
longer than experienced outdoorsmen/hunters would (Tom says
he still stumbles across the body of at least one lost hunter
each year).
I hope you buy this book. After you're done
it, come back here to check my reviews of some of his other
books too!
