If You Have A Friend

If You Have A Friend
Here’s a great poem I chanced upon recently:

If You Have A Friend
If you have a friend worth loving,
Love him. Yes, and let him know
That you love him, ere life’s evening
Tinge his brow with sunsets glow.
Why should good words ne’er be said
Of a friend–till he is dead?

If you hear a song that thrills you
Sung by any child of song,
Praise it. Do not let the singer
Wait deserved praises long.
Why should one who thrills your heart
Lack the joy you may impart?

If you hear a prayer that moves you
By its humble, pleading tone,
Join it. Do not let the seeker
Bow before his God alone.
Why should not your brother share
The strength of “two or three” in prayer?

If you see hot tears falling
From a brothers weeping eyes,
Share them. And by kindly sharing
Our own kinship in the skies.
Why should anyone be glad
Whan a brother’s heart is sad?

If a silvery laugh goes rippling
Through the sunshine on his face,
Share it. Tis the wish man’s saying
For both grief and joy a place.
There’s health and goodness in the mirth
In which an honest laugh has birth.

If your work is made more easy
By a friendly helping hand,
Say so. Speak out brave and truly
Ere a darkness veil the land.
Should a brother workman dear
Falter for a word of cheer?

Scatter thus your seeds of kindness
All encircling as you go–
Leave them. Trust the Harvest Giver;
He will make each seed to grow.
So until the happy end
Your life will never lack a friend.

What a precious gift you have when you welcome a friend into your arms. They are more precious then any jewel, they hold the key to a loving heart and soul. Their words of wisdom will help you through so many obstacles you may encounter through your life. Their hug will bring you comfort when tears wont go away. Most of all you know there is someone who loves and cares for you and that you are never alone.

I love this poem, every word is special a true meaning of what love and friendship is all about. Gifts to treasure forever and hold them close to your heart.

    Love always, Lee

Hi! Beautiful poem, I loved it. I was just wondering whether the author really is unknown… I chanced to find the first two stanzas of this poem under Daniel Webster Hoyt in my Familiar Quotations. So…?

Alberto, that seems true, for the first 2 or 3 paragraphs, but the last several paragraphs are nowhere to be found on the net. I think I published the original poem in-full, whereas everyone else only has a portion…and so I’m a little apprehensive in believing that person is really the author. No Wikipedia entry either. If he were the author, you’d think the 20,000 pages that do contain the first 3 lines of the poem would also contain the entire poem….? Thanks for checking into it, though. I’d love to give the proper attribution.
