Some quotes make the best impression if they are taken at face value without a great deal of thought. Tom Robbin’s quote for instance quickly falls apart with just a little thought. If nothing else it is a brain teaser. One’s perception of reality does not change reality, it only changes how you might respond to it. An object might be an obstacle to you if it is blocking your path, or it could simply be a challenge, none-the-less it remains an object.
Henri Bergson’s quote on the other hand deserve a great deal of thought and tends to grow in value as you consider the insight that if offers. To put a Biblical point on it, The acquisition of knowledge never ceases: “Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.” Ecclesiastes12:12. You can nail down glimpses of truth upon which to hang your hat, but know that you have much yet to learn and just because you recognize a piece of reality as fact you still have a thousand ways to react to it as the great immensity of creation out runs perception. So keep on learning.
Fantastic Shawn, a delightful and very meaningful read. I really liked …The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend. -Robertson Davies
