Ten Motivational Quotes by Famous Authors

Guest post by Alisa Gilbert

When I think about motivational quotes, I often seek out some of my favorite authors. I figure if I need a good quote to help me get motivated to accomplish some important task or to get started on a project that has been intimidating me for some time, then I should turn to a group of people who already have a beautiful way with words. After all, I’m a firm believer in the notion that beautiful and worthwhile ideas can only be realized through telling them through beautiful and worthwhile language. I hope that some of these motivational quotes can inspire you to do worthwhile acts in your life, if only by the beauty of how they are written.

You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true. You may have to work for it, however. –Richard Bach

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. –Samuel Beckett

Without a firm idea of himself and the purpose of his life, man cannot live, and would sooner destroy himself than remain on earth, even if he was surrounded by bread. –Fyodor Dostoyevsky

It is the people who can do nothing who find nothing to do, and the secret to happiness in this world is not only to be useful, but to be forever elevating one’s uses. –Sarah Orne Jewett

The important thing is not the finding, it is the seeking, it is the devotion with which one spins the wheel of prayer and scripture, discovering the truth little by little. –Ursla L. LeGuin

It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams. –Gabriel Garcia-Marquez

When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn. –Harriet Beecher Stowe

Nothing contributes so much to tranquilizing the mind as a steady purpose — a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye. –Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. –Mark Twain

Don’t wait around for other people to be happy for you. Any happiness you get you’ve got to make yourself. –Alice Walker

If you have any other motivational quotes by famous authors, please share them. I’m also interested in, of course, seeing motivational quotes by all kinds of people as well, so let us have a look at those in the comments section too. I hope this post has encouraged you in some way or another, no matter how little.
