If you sit down at set of sun
And count the acts that you have done,
And, counting, find
One self-denying deed, one word
That eased the heart of him who heard,
One glance most kind
That fell like sunshine where it went–
Then you may count that day well spent.
But if, through all the livelong day,
You’ve cheered no heart, by yea or nay–
If, through it all
You’ve nothing done that you can trace
That brought the sunshine to one face–
No act most small
That helped some soul and nothing cost–
Then count that day as worse than lost.

Hello Shawn,
Wonderful thoughts you post on how to make each day count. My day is special when I can wipe the tears away from a little child in pain. Comfort a friend trying to survive cancer. Give the wisdom of my thoughts to help my family, with a hug and kiss to let them know how very much I love them. Every day brings something new and when we touch someone’s heart, bring about a smile, show the elderly we have not forgotten them. These moments will always be treasured gifts that live in memory, sealed with love for eternity.
Just some thoughts!
This morning when I wakened
And saw the sun above,
I softly said, “Good morning, Lord,
Bless everyone I love.”
And right away I thought of you
And said a loving prayer,
That He would bless you specially,
And keep you free from care.
I thought of all the happiness
A day could hold in store,
I wished it all for you because
No one deserves it more.
Hope you have a wonderful day!
This was great. I am new to your list and browse through old posts when I have time. This was new to me and I enjoyed it. Thanks for the re-post.
Thanks, Nikki. Welcome to the list.
Nice poem. Yours was too Lee.
Great poem! Motivating. I liked Lee’s thoughts and poem too. All good for the soul.
I want you to know how much I appreciate your “Thoughts.” They uplift me and make me smile. Personally, I feel if I have not made someone’s life better that I have wasted that day. Twenty years ago today my youngest son, Gabriel, passed away. Your thoughts have had a soothing effect on my soul. For this I thank you.
Bob
I’m humbled to help you in some way, Bob. Thanks for sharing your thoughts; it’s encouraging me to try to do what you do…to improve someone’s life daily. Thanks
why did george eliot divided the poem “count that day lost” in two stanzas?
