This Too Shall Pass Away

This Too Shall Pass Away
This Too Shall Pass Away

When sorrows come into your life
And threaten to destroy
The very things you treasure most,
Your happiness and joy;

And when that crushing power
Threatens everything worth while,
And clouds of darkness gather
And you find it hard to smile;

Then lift your head and let the world
Hear every word you say.
With faith undaunted say to them:
“This too, shall pass away.”

When you are over-burdened
With life’s toil and earthly care;
When life becomes so dreary
It seems more than you can bear;

When weariness o’ercomes you
And you yearn for peaceful rest,
And trials of the day leave you
Discouraged and depressed;

There is no song within your heart;
You feel you cannot pray;
Then turn your thoughts to gladness for
“This too, shall pass away.”

When fortune smiles upon you,
And your cup of joy is full;
When everything you want is yours,
And life seems wonderful;

When days and weeks go flitting by
With happiness replete;
And you desire nothing more
To make your life complete;

Beware lest all these treasures
Of this earth lead you astray,
And hear again these truthful words:
“This too, shall pass away.”

And so remember well these words,
Whate’er your lot may be,
For life is ever changing–
With such rapidity.

Our gladness turns to sadness
When the sunshine disappears,
And sorrows change to happiness
When God has calmed our fears.

Compared with all eternity,
This life is but one day.
We cling to life, and yet we know
“This too, shall pass away.”

  1. A beautifully written poem Shawn, it touches upon every aspect of life that comes to be…. but it is noted that nothing ever remains forever even life on this earth takes one last breath and begins again in eternity. We worry and stress over so many things, what we need to do is accept the things we cannot change, do our best with whatever we can to improve our existence, relax and enjoy what is, before long it will be just a memory, gone forever. Sometimes dreams go unnoticed because we are just too busy. Time to take a moment to see what is beautiful on this earth because one day it will be all gone just like you and me.

    Hope you have a wonderful day!

    • Thanks for this, Lee. I worry about dreams going unnoticed, as you say, because life is so busy; I fear waking up one day and having all my goals still unattained and everything else suffered because I didn’t slow down to smell the roses. Just a few days ago I did slow down a little to just enjoy how beautiful the world is and I’m shocked I don’t do it every day. It was amazing: I was on the north coast of Lake Scugog, 35 minutes north of my house, down a dead-end and was looking at a private drive with several large houses right by the water; the wind was blowing and making that wonderful sound in the trees; the sound of that, plus the sunshine on the lake were so shockingly beautiful, it almost made me cry! I wish I sought out those moments every day! And if I could share it with my wife and kids, that would be perfect….

      • For me I love watching the ocean especially at night, the water glistens forming shadows that dance upon each wave as they roll on in. I love to listen to the sound of the waves rolling in, feeling the soft breeze upon my face. Looking up to heaven I see a million stars twinkling, I use to tell the children they were winking at each other. The moon in all its forms casts a spell and when it is full it is so beautiful. I either walk along the shore line, or sit on a rock and admire the view. All the stress disappears, I feel such peace within my heart and soul. I think how wonderful it is to see and feel and be a part of this beautiful experience. I can understand what you felt, nature is magical

  2. I needed this poem so much today just woke up feeling down and then got some bad news a few minutes ago. But this too shall pass away!!!

  3. Hi Shawn,

    Wonderful and touching.
    There are a lot of things we miss in our life just because we are too busy.Sometines we need to slow down and enjoy everything around us, the beautiful scenieries… anything. Life is wonderful.
    I think i will start to enjoy the beautiful moments before its too late.

    Thanks a lot and have a lovely day.

    Cheers…… 🙂

  4. words of wisdom any given day. we all are probably blinded to the little joys in life, consumed by ‘our own businesses’ most of the time.
    Problems beyond our control gobble up precious moments that need to be savoured.

    it is a blessed life for each one of us. where ever we might be. Thanks Shawn for the lovely little reminder. i am going back to enjoy the feeling of raindrops on my face.

  5. Various family members on my mother’s side have always used the adage “This too shall pass” to quiet my fears and distress when life got tough. Thanks for posting the poem 🙂

  6. This poem also reminds me of the LDS Hymn “Count your blessings”, which was also mentioned in the conference last April. Very nice!
