Lorraine…charged for what?

In the 1960’s I was reading this to my siblings from a book my mom got in Chicago. It was published by the Don McNeill Breakfast Club which was a radio show there. Some of the other poems on your site I believe were also in it.

I’m afraid I’m not the best one to help you with this, Melony. It sounds like he has some issues with self-worth if every little thing makes him feel that way. I guess just reassure him 20 times a day that you love & accept him and that your choice of words are not meant to hurt him. Also, I think relationship counseling is something to look into here, even if it’s just at church or through a community help group? Does that help?

Well, years ago I used a plugin that translated my entire site into something like 40 or 50 languages. But it caused a big server load & I had to remove it. Hi Deke, I`m a big fan of Robert Schuller, so I`d give him credit for this, but I don`t think he wrote it. First, I can find no reference of him writing it. 2nd, if I remember correctly, I found it in a book dated from many decades ago, which may have pre-dated Schuller`s ministry. 3rd, I found several references to this poem in *partial* form, whereas I appeared to have the full poem…so there`s a lot of people out there with bits & pieces of it. So perhaps Rev. Schuller read out a piece of the poem during a sermon or included it in a book. Thanks, though, for your comment. Let me know if you can find something I`ve missed. 🙂

Once again, this poem was written by my great aunt Lottie Pratt Brown. I have the book in which it was published by Neiman Marcus. The story is amazing. I would love to relate it to you & dispell any doubt you have about Johnny Cash’s mother. Perhaps it was a favorite of hers. Pat Pratt Bickley

Yes, she worked at Neiman Marcus in Dallas. They published a book of her poems. There was a really great story she told me of how it was published. Her name at the time of her death was Lottie Pratt Richards. She is buried in Corsicana, TX. I have a copy of her book. This poem, somehow, was published in many papers as Author Unknown! Her story is fascinating! I’ll be glad to tell you her story. Thanks, Pat Pratt Bickley.

Anyway, no, there’s never a loss. Running a website is so cheap, you could never lose money. $8 for a URL, $5/month or less for hosting. It’s so cheap. And if you work on promoting your site for at least an hour or 2 every day, it’s also very easy to get traffic, and then make money. I really don’t promote myself anymore, so I don’t make as much as I used to (I used to make good $$), but my traffic still pays some bills. It’s all from ads, though. I never figured out how to sell affiliate products. I just can’t do it. I can’t figure it out. Even when I had an email list of 35,000 subscribers, no one would buy from my recommendations. It was weird. But no I wish I had never shut down that previous email list! What was I thinking?!

To Nya K. Taryor: Margaret May Prentice was my great aunt, and in the early 1970s she gave each of us a copy of her book. As a 20-year-old, I took little interest in it, and many years later when I was finally able to read it with appreciation, Aunt Margaret had already passed away, along with all the adventures of her dedicated and purposeful life that did not make it into her book. Thanks so much for sharing this memory of her.

I don’t know, Lew. I found most of the copies on the net that seem to attribute it to CC Miller, but I see he was really just a famous beekeeper, and wrote a lot about bees. Why would he then switch and write about sheep, right? 🙂

I did find another variation of this poem by Minnie Lee Bovender, and it’s similar, but still very different. I DID find a couple mentions of Rev CD Meigs quoting this poem and others rather recently, whereas CC Miller is first quoted as being the author of this back in 1965.

Douglas MacArthur was a man to admire. Even in my line of work as the president of a Christian College, one might think that a person could never loose sight of the need to maintain one’s dependency on Divine guidance however, that line of thinking can cause great disaster. The one who is lulled into believing that a personal relationship with God comes with the job is the one who just might find himself walking down the same road as King Saul. There is no job, no walk of life and no life style capable of keeping a person connected with God. To the contrary, it is the humble man, who faithfully relies upon his dependency on God who finds himself enabled and fully capable of meeting the greatest challenges of every job in any walk of life out of any given lifestyle.

You make some interesting comments, Sherlyn. After re-reading this page, I realized a lot of these quotes are a bit negative…but I do think many of they are to be taken with a grain of salt. Either way, I think I might go digging for some new ones so I can beef up the page. What?? Really?? That’s amazing! Can you tell me more? I copied down this poem about 25 years ago from a book I read.

I kind of fizzled out, closed down all my email lists, and stopped working on the web. But I’m trying to get back into it. For now, the only list I have is the automated new blog post mailing. I also send out quotes via Facebook and Twitter, so that’s always an option?

I took a fall at the start of the year, I hurt my hip and back, only been able to sit on a char longer then 10 minutes in the last couple weeks. I still have problems with walking but I am getting there, slowly…. I have lots of things to catch up with at home since being laid up for two months, three weeks were spent bed ridden. It has always been plainly evident to me for as far back as I can remember, that the only thing which is acceptable is perfection. ‘Get it right, first time, every time’ is the goal that I consistently fail to achieve. This is not an attitude that I choose for myself or have any control over, but is simply the result of basic philosophy: there is no excuse for mistakes, there is no excuse for failure and thus my constant inability to succeed does indeed mean that I am inferior, I am a fool and I am a disgrace.

Alberto, that seems true, for the first 2 or 3 paragraphs, but the last several paragraphs are nowhere to be found on the net. I think I published the original poem in-full, whereas everyone else only has a portion…and so I’m a little apprehensive in believing that person is really the author. No Wikipedia entry either. If he were the author, you’d think the 20,000 pages that do contain the first 3 lines of the poem would also contain the entire poem….? Thanks for checking into it, though. I’d love to give the proper attribution.

Thanks, Helen…but no, it’s not due to the big email list I used to run. On that one I shut down, I only had 33,000 subscribers and only about 1000 people would visit my blog whenever I’d send out a mailing. My drop in traffic is only due to one thing: lower rankings in Google. All I ever do is read up how to “fix” my site…so one of these days I’ll figure it out. 🙂

Yeah, part of the problem I think is that I got hit by Google’s first Penguin update. I believe I’ve cleaned up the cause and I’m waiting for the next update. But in the meantime, I really haven’t been getting any new content out there or new links from other sites. That’s probably killing me!
